St Rumbold’s Well
According to a 10th century document, St. Rumbold was born in nearby King’s Sutton in 662 at the site of a spring (which is still an operational spring). Living only for three days, he is said to have foretold his own death and asked for his body to lie at Brackley before being buried at Buckingham.
As his body travelled to Brackley, where they rested, a new well sprang up. So powerful was his presence that the well was said to be the site of many miracles. It is now part of a private garden. His body rested in Brackley before being taken to Buckingham where there is also a spring.
He is also remembered at the Golden Spring Well on Pebble Lane.
Miracles aside, the waters help secure their place within Brackley history by helping to name Watery Lane. It is said that the water from the springs ran down the road and subsequently gave the road its name!
