Brackley War Memorial

War Memorial

The memorial was unveiled on 5 October 1920 by highly decorated General Lord Horne. Originally for the town’s lost residents during the First World War, the inscription on each panel reads: TO THE MEN OF/ BRACKLEY/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR KING/ AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919.

Names were subsequently added for those lost in the Second World War and later through the conflict in Afghanistan. The monument also denotes the various theatres of war where residents fought from Ypres to the Falklands and Gallipoli to Russia.

The memorial stands on the Piazza opposite Brackley’s iconic Town Hall. Once situated where the car park now exists, the memorial was granted Grade II-listed status for its historic value, design and context amongst other historic buildings.

The monument has been extremely well maintained and in 2014 was again cleaned and had its letters repainted. It is surrounded by a small York stone wall.
