Brackley market place

Market place

Brackley benefits from a handsomely wide town centre anchored by the majestic Town Hall. The town’s broad design is consistent with nearby Cotswold towns and reflects the town’s status and importance in days gone by.

Much has changed in the middle of the town’s market place over the years but the surrounding properties have remained broadly similar.

Patterson’s chemist, now Boots chemist, was situated in a building that was located in the middle of the Market Square. Boots relocated to its current location in 1951 and its former home was demolished in 1961, allowing for a larger more open town centre, now used by the town centre’s car park, home to the annual Town Charter Fair.

The town’s War Memorial, which was unveiled in 1920 by General Lord Horne, was once situated between the chemist and the Town Hall. In 2006 as part of the Town Hall’s redevelopment it was relocated to be closer to the Town Hall and within a new cobbled piazza area.

The Market Square was, and still is, the hub of Brackley town centre. Brackley’s market activity can be traced to the early 1700s and today a market still meets every Friday.

The Market Place has a rich and diverse history with many shops, restaurants, lodgings, homes, businesses, inns and the like having lined the impressive tree adorned avenue over the years.
