Brackley Morris Men
The Brackley Morris Men are an all-male morris dance club performing dances in the ‘Cotswold’ tradition. They are one of only seven remaining traditional Cotswold Morris ‘sides’ in England with a history extending back to the 1600s. This gives them a cherished place in Brackley’s local heritage.
As with most Cotswold sides, the kit consists of white shirts & trousers and black top hat. However the men each choose their own colours for baldrics and rosettes, a practice thought to date back to the time when the men went touring from Brackley and picked up dancers from other local villages on the way.
The choruses and figures of the dances are unique to Brackley, and the modern side continues to preserve, practice and perform them regularly throughout the year.
Our annual outings are on May Day, St Georges Day, Boxing Day and over the August Bank Holiday weekend. We also perform at fete’s, weddings, dance festivals and a variety of social events.
We continue to thrive through receiving regular bookings, and a steady influx of new dancers and musicians. Newcomers are always welcome. No experience necessary, though a sense of rhythm clearly helps. Boys are also welcome, but need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
We meet for practice every Thursday evening (during term times) from 8pm to 10pm at Brackley Junior School, Manor Road, Brackley, Northants, NN13 6EE. Call us before you come to check that we’re there.
